The current series "ArchiTexture" by the artist BASE23 finds formal references to Brutalism, a style of architecture in the 1950s - 60s. Significant features of this style of building are the use of exposed concrete - "Béton Brut" as Corbusier described the material used - as well as the emphasis on construction, simple geometric forms and an often rough elaboration and structuring of the buildings.
BASE23 has long been concerned with the impact of Brutalism. Among other things, the Hansaviertel in Berlin served as a source of inspiration, and its design forms a major component in the artist's new works. Quotations and motifs from these buildings can be found in the current compositions.
ArchiTEXTURE
ArchiTexture depicts brutalist sculptures made of fragments of the artist's name letters. The appearance of different materials is painterly reinforced by impressive structures. A deep but at the same time light impression is created in the contrasting play of hard, black surfaces, the transparency created and the multi-faceted reflections. A surreal glassy effect of concrete objects that makes the viewer forget time and space.
This impression is reinforced by handmade paper as the chosen background. With its coarse-pored texture and torn edges, it underlines the elaboration of the compositions and gives the works the desired rough structures of concrete.
The works are deliberately kept monochrome in black and white, on the one hand to quote the often used aesthetics of photography of this architecture, on the other hand to direct the viewer's focus on the language of form, composition and material texture.
Time as a phenomenon inherent in the work
As in the previous works, BASE23 deals with the theme of time in the current series. ArchiTexture forms analogies of a construction method that is past in time. The chosen black and white contrast offers the viewer space for association and at the same time conveys the impression of old photographs of Brutalism.
The composition of the painted objects in their seemingly weathered structures, as well as the torn edges of some pictorial elements and those of the edges of the handmade paper, create a field of tension between history and futurism that makes a chronological classification ambiguous. Here, too, the artist leaves room for the viewer to decide whether the sculptures are decaying, in the process of demolition or under construction. Only the year in which the works were created suggests the here and now and thus creates a timelessness that can be found in its conciseness in BASE23's oeuvre on many levels.

Die aktuelle Serie „ArchiTexture“ des Künstlers BASE23 findet formal Bezüge zum Brutalismus, einem Baustil der Architektur in den 1950 - 60er Jahren. Signifikante Merkmale dieser Bauart ist die Verwendung von Sichtbeton – „Béton Brut“ wie Corbusier das verwendete Material beschrieb – sowie die Betonung der Konstruktion, einfachen geometrischen Formen und einer oftmals groben Ausarbeitung und Gliederung der Gebäude.
BASE23 befasst sich schon seit Längerem mit der Wirkung des Brutalismus. Unter anderem diente als Inspirationsquelle das Hansaviertel in Berlin, das in seiner Formgebung einen großen Bestandteil in den neuen Arbeiten des Künstlers einnimmt. Zitate und Motive dieser Bauten lassen sich in den aktuellen Kompositionen wiederfinden.
ArchiTEXTURE
ArchiTexture bildet brutalistische Skulpturen aus Fragmenten der Namens-buchstaben des Künstlers ab. Der Anschein verschiedener Materialien wird malerisch durch eindrückliche Strukturen verstärkt. Ein tiefer, zugleich aber leichter Eindruck entsteht in dem Kontrastspiel aus harten, schwarzen Flächen, der geschaffenen Transparenz und den facettenreichen Spiegelungen. Eine surreal gläserne Wirkung von Betonobjekten, die den Betrachter Zeit und Raum vergessen lässt.
Verstärkt wird dieser Eindruck durch Büttenpapier als gewählten Untergrund. Mit seiner grobporigen Beschaffenheit und den gerissenen Kanten unterstreicht es die Ausarbeitung der Kompositionen und verleiht den Arbeiten die gewünschten rauen Strukturen von Beton.
Die Arbeiten sind bewusst monochrom in Schwarz-Weiß gehalten, einerseits um die oft verwendete Ästhetik der Fotografie dieser Architektur zu zitieren, andererseits um den Fokus des Betrachters auf Formensprache, Komposition und Materialbeschaffenheit zu lenken.
Zeit als werkimmanentes Phänomen
Wie auch in den vorherigen Arbeiten befasst sich BASE23 in der aktuellen Serie mit dem Thema Zeit. ArchiTexture bildet Analogien einer zeitlich vergangenen Bauweise. Die gewählte schwarz-weiße Kontrastierung bietet dem Betrachter Raum für Assoziation und vermittelt gleichzeitig den Eindruck alter Fotografien des Brutalismus.
Die Komposition der gemalten Objekte in ihren scheinbar von Witterung geprägten Strukturen wie auch die abgerissenen Kanten einiger Bildelemente sowie die der Ränder des Büttenpapiers, schaffen ein Spannungsfeld zwischen Historie und Futurismus, das eine zeitliche Einordnung uneindeutig macht. Der Künstler lässt dem Betrachter auch hier Raum und somit offen, ob es sich um zerfallene, im Abbruch oder im Neubau befindliche Skulpturen handelt. Lediglich das Entstehungsjahr der Arbeiten lässt auf das Hier und Jetzt schließen und schafft damit eine Zeitlosigkeit, die man in ihrer Prägnanz in BASE23 Gesamtwerk auf vielen Ebenen wiederfindet.
